Milford Senior Center Posts October Events

October is a month that promises to be colorful, crisp and inviting!   The Milford Senior Center at 9 Jepson Drive has programs and activities that will provide entertainment, opportunities to create, hobbies to develop, cultural and educational programs, travel and so much more.

                        BASIC SEMINAR ON MEDICARE 101

The Milford Senior Center is hosting an informational program on Medicare 101.  This educational seminar will take place at the Center, 9 Jepson Drive, Tuesday, October 8th  at 1:00 p.m.. . This is an opportunity to tale advantage of a basic understanding of how Medicare works and what it covers and when you are entitled to enroll.                         CELEBRATING WITH A HARVEST TABLE SETTING

It is harvest time again and no better way to celebrate this beautiful colorful season than with an inviting, attractive, seasonal table setting. A visit to this  informative decorative presentation at the Milford Senior Center, 9 Jepson Drive will provide a bevy of decorating expertise to your repertoire of seasonal images. Thursday, October 10th at 1:00 p.m. you are invited to discover the elements of a fun, colorful  buffet, tablescaping techniques 101,healthful recipe handouts, easy wine/spirit recommendations, cheeseboard prime and easy entertaining ideas.  Samplings of fine chocolates, chocolate Harvest bark, fun virgin beverages , fun poetry and trivia quizzes as well.                                       HOW TO SIMPLIFY YOUR FINANCES

            The Milford Senior Center is presenting a program on simplifying your finances and the pros and cons of multiple accounts.  Wednesday, October 16th.  The 1:00 p.m. discussion will be led by retired Financial Planner  Stephen Archer. What to do with all the paper work you get, how accounts are titled and what happens to your accounts when you pass away are among the topics to be discussed.                                     OVERVIEW OF CONNECTICARE AND MEDICARE PLANS

            Susan Stokes, a certified Medicare Insurance professional will present the Medicare Advantage Plans of ConnecticCare during a discussion at the Milford Senior Center, 9 Jepson Drive Thursday, October 17th at 1:00 p.m.  This seminar will include an overview of how Medicare works along  with a summary of ConnectiCare’s MAPD Plans.

Running Water for Africa 5K Race/Walk, 1 Mile Walk

This event has a 5K run/walk plus an untimed 1 mile walk.  There will also be a kids fun run.  Registration opens at 7:30.  Both courses have beautiful water views.  Uganda Farmers Inc. is a nonprofit organization that brings clean, running water to remote villages in Africa. This is the organization's main fundraising event.  We’ve brought water to thousands of people in remote villages in western Uganda through our fundraising efforts over the past several years. The proceeds of this year’s event are for a new water catchment project in the village of Bwindi, Uganda. We are also funding a new project in Tanzania, near Serengeti National Park. The Ashley Davis Band

An internationally recognized recording artist and songwriter, Ashley has collaborated with such musical luminaries as the Chieftains' Paddy Moloney, fiddle player Eileen Ivers, Joannie Madden, harpist Cormac De Barra, singer-songwriters John Doyle and John Spillane, and the "First Lady of Celtic Music," Moya Brennan.

Ashely will be joined by renowned traditional fiddle player Colin Farrell who has made a name for himself performing and recording with an array of iconic musicians in Europe and the US, including such groups as Flook, Grada, Karen Casey, John Doyle, Tim O’Brien, The Elders, Julie Fowlis, The Michael McGoldrick Band and is currently playing with the band Lúnasa.

Rounding out the trio is Dave Curley, a multi-instrumentalist, singer and dancer from Corofin, Co. Galway, who regularly performs with Grammy Award winner Moya Brennan of Clannad among other acclaimed groups. Dave has also recorded with producer Donal Lunny and Grammy award Winners Ron Block, Jeff Taylor and Buddy Greene.

The Wicked Witch of the West: Kansas or Bust

“The Wicked Witch of the West: Kansas or Bust” is an imaginative sequel to Dorothy’s journey in Oz.  The musical comedy features the Wicked Witch  and the best-loved characters from Oz descending on Kansas in hopes of finding broomsticks, slippers and of course, Dorothy! Written by Bert Bernardi & Justin Rugg, the show won five 2014 Broadway World Awards and now returns to The MAC, Milford Arts Council, where it debuted. Milford Historical Society Tour of Milford Cemetery Oct. 19

Come “Meet the Residents” at the Old Milford Cemetery when the Milford Historical Society sponsors its 8th annual cemetery tour. Meet on Sat., Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the DAR Chapter House, 55 Prospect St. (Rain date Oct. 26.) Tickets for adults are $5, free for children 12 and younger with a paying adult.  You will be greeted by costumed re-enactors beside tombstones who will tell you about the life of the person at that particular grave. In case of rain early in the day, call (203) 877-1851 to ask if the tour is still on or has been postponed until Oct. 26.
