Eastbound Theatre presents "Sylvia"

Eastbound Theatre presents "Sylvia"

“Sylvia” by A.R. Gurney- directed by Kevin Pelky: February 2nd through February 18th

Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after twenty-two years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg’s career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate’s career, as a public-school English teacher, is beginning to offer her more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park—or that has found him—bearing only the name “Sylvia” on her name tag. A street-smart mixture of Lab and Poodle, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. And Sylvia thinks Kate just doesn’t understand the relationship between man and dog. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy until, after a series of hilarious and touching complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise, and Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives.

“I can only call it one of the most involving, beautiful, funny, touching and profound plays I have ever seen…” —NY Daily News. “Gurney’s mad comedy is the most endearing good time to trot down the pike in many a moon. Howlingly funny…” —BackStage.

From Jazz to Soul - Great African American Women Singers

In celebration of African-American History Month, on Sunday, February 11th at 2 pm, Milford Library, 57 New Haven Ave., welcomes the extraordinary vocal talents of Rhonda Denét. Accompanied by pianist Mike Bardash, Rhonda will perform a collection of jazz standards and soul classics that spans 5 decades. You’ll enjoy hits from a time when the "First Lady Of Song," Ella Fitzgerald graced the stage to when the "Queen of Soul," Aretha Franklin ruled the airways. Homage will be paid not only to Ella and Aretha, but also to jazz stylists such as Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone, and Nancy Wilson. Soul divas Etta James, Martha Reeves, Mary Wells, and Gladys Knight will also be represented.  After celebrating all who have influenced her, Rhonda will share some of her original music. Through the music, the magic and the message, there is bound to be something for everyone!

A star in her own right, Ms. Denét began studying music at an early age. Her passion led her to earn a Bachelor of Music from New York University and a graduate degree in Arts Administration from Florida State University’s School of Music. Since 2007 she has been active in the professional music scene as a writer, producer and singer with several New York area bands. For more complete information about Rhonda Denét and her projects, visit www.RhondaDenetMusic.com .

This free program is made possible by the generosity of the Friends of Milford Library.

In the event of inclement weather, there is a snow date scheduled for March 18th.

Unexpected, Unusual and True Facts About Our Presidents

On Wednesday, February 21 at 7pm, join us at Milford Library, 57 New Haven Ave. as Stephen Spignesi explores a whole other side of our nation’s leaders. From George Washington to Barack Obama, this collection of weird and wild—but true!—facts will shed light on the little-known quirkiness of our presidents. Just a sampling:

  • Andrew Jackson married a bigamist.
  • Martin Van Buren wore pistols in the Senate chamber in case things got too rowdy.
  • Franklin Pierce ran over a woman with his horse while in office and was arrested, but police released him once they realized he was the president.
  • James Garfield could simultaneously write Greek with one hand and Latin with the other.
  • Dwight D. Eisenhower’s nickname for his staff driver was “Private Parts.”
  • Barack Obama can bench press 200 pounds.

All attendees will receive a free, tri-fold, color, signed brochure about the presidents.

Stephen Spignesi is a New York Times bestselling author who writes about historical biography, popular culture, television, film, American and world history, and contemporary fiction. He is also a professor of English at the University of New Haven, a poet, screenwriter, musician, and novelist. He has written more than 50 books. His website is www.stephenspignesi.com.
