Life on Parole

On January 23 at 6:30pm (snow date January 30), Milford Library and Milford Speaks Out are pleased to co-host a screening of  Life on Parole, a documentary produced by FRONTLINE and The New York Times, that goes inside the parole system in Connecticut to examine its ongoing effort to rethink parole: a condition that offers a taste of freedom but comes with strict prohibitions on whom you can live with, where you can go, what time you have to be home, and more.

“Most people who are in prison in America will one day be released on parole,” says Matthew O’Neill, the Oscar®-nominated and Emmy®-winning director of Life on Parole. “And as Connecticut brings its prison population down and attempts to give parolees more chances to succeed, we wanted to see if the experience of the parolees reflected these changes.”

With unique access inside Connecticut’s corrections system, as well as camera-phone footage filmed by the parolees themselves, the film follows four former prisoners as   they navigate the challenges of more than a year on parole — from finding work, to staying sober, to parenting — and doing it all while under intense supervision from the state. A discussion will follow the screening.

VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME AS AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TUTOR

Literacy Volunteers Offers Tutor Training to Help Local Adults

Make a difference in someone else’s life! Did you know there are more than 15,000 people in Milford and Stratford without a high school diploma? Did you know there are more than 1,600 adults who are not fluent in English. Did you know there are 53 non-English languages spoken in these cities?
(Data taken from the Milford and Stratford School District Strategic School Profile, 2012-2013)

Literacy Volunteers is offering volunteer TUTOR TRAINING classes in ESL (English as a Second Language) and Basic Literacy.

TUTOR TRAINING classes in Milford will be held at Fannie Beach Community Center, 16 Dixon Street, Milford from 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 24, 31, February 7, 14, 21.

TUTOR TRAINING classes in Stratford will be held at the Stratford Library, 2203 Main St. Stratford from 5:45 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. in Spring 2018.

Volunteer tutors will learn techniques to assist Basic Literacy and ESL students with dialogue, listening comprehension, oral fluency, phonics, reading comprehension and writing skills. No previous teaching experience required! All prospective tutors will be interviewed in advance. For further information, call The Literacy office between the hours of 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at 203-878-4800 or stop by the Stratford Library Satellite Office on Mondays, 10:00 - 12:00, Wednesdays, 10:00 – 12:00 or 3:00 – 5:00.

Additionally, if you are interested in working with students preparing for their GED (General Equivalency Diploma) examination, or prefer to help adult students with basic literacy skills, call the Center’s office to schedule your orientation meeting.

Literacy Volunteers is part of the ProLiteracy network of adult basic education and literacy programs. ProLiteracy is working with its member programs to raise awareness of available ESL services.

“Non-English speakers in the U.S. can fall behind in education or employment in an already challenging job market,” said David C. Harvey, president and CEO of ProLiteracy. “Language barriers can also prevent them from understanding important financial, educational, health care, employment or legal rights issues. By raising awareness of our members’ ESL programs, adults in need will know where to find resources that can help them gain skills to address everyday matters.”

For more information on Literacy Volunteers of Southern CT’s ESL and other volunteer programs, visit www.lvsct.org or call 203-878-4800.
