Flu Clinic 2017

Milford Senior Center Hosts Flu Clinic

Deepa Joseph, Director of The Milford Health Department has announced two Flu Clinics will take place at the Milford Senior Center, 9 Jepson Drive, Wednesday, October 11th and Monday, October 16th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Please do not arrive before 9:00 a.m.

To pre-register, contact Insurance Specialists, Jackie Sconzo or Laura Daneault at 203 877-5131 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Please have your insurance information available when you call.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) details that each year, more than 425,000 related hospitalizations and up to 36,000 flu-related deaths occur.  It is estimated that 52% of the hospitalizations and 78% of the deaths occur in people 65 years of age or older.

The Milford Health Department will offer Fluzone High Dose for individuals 65 years of age and over at their Flu Clinics this season, including the Senior Center Flu Clinics.  Fluzone High Dose is the first and only influenza vaccine designed specifically for people 65 years of age and older.  Persons in this age group have a higher risk of complications from influenza.  Aging can decrease the body’s ability to have a good immune response after getting the influenza vaccine.  A higher dose of antigen in the vaccine helps provide older adults a better immune response and therefore better protection against the flu.

"Fake News" in the 21st Century

Is “fake news” a modern phenomena, or does it have deeper roots in American history?  And how do you spot fake news in the midst of the modern, and frequently chaotic, 24/7 news cycle?  On October 12th at 6:30pm, Professor Matthew W. Dunne will explore the history and significance of “fake news” in contemporary American politics, and provide patrons of the Milford Public Library, 57 New Haven Ave.,  with helpful tools to distinguish between “fake news” and legitimate journalism in 21st century America.

Matthew W. Dunne is an Assistant Professor of History and Political Science at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, CT.  Matthew received his Ph.D. in History at Brown University in Rhode Island, and his first book, “A Cold War State of Mind: Brainwashing and Postwar American Society,” was published by the University of Massachusetts press.  He teaches courses on politics, government, and American history.
