CT Audubon Milford Point-Talk-Oystering Long Island Sound

The oyster is often described as a slippery, briny foodie’s delight but to some it’s not so appealing. Whether you love to eat them or not, these fascinating bivalves are an integral part of the Long Island Sound ecosystem. An oyster can filter an average of 50 gallons of water a day! Join us for a talk by local oysterman, Larry Fernandes who will share his experiences and knowledge of harvesting oysters and fishing in Long Island Sound.

Larry Fernandes, of Larry’s Lobsters LLC, has always had a love of the water ever since his father took him lobstering at the age of five. At age eleven he started clamming for fun. In September of 1991, he started his own lobster business. When the lobsters died off in 1999, he started fishing for whelk and began offshore lobstering. Larry went onto open a seafood wholesale company and in 2013 he left the wholesale business and went into oystering. His passion and life-long, extensive knowledge of the marine environment contributes to Larry’s success in oyster farming.
