The Center for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) details that each year, more than 425,000 related
hospitalizations and up to 36,000 flu-related deaths occur. It is estimated that 52% of the
hospitalizations and 78% of the deaths occur in people 65 years of age or
older.
The Milford Health Department will
offer Fluzone High Dose for individuals 65 years of age and over at their Flu
Clinics this season, including the Senior Center Flu Clinics. Fluzone High Dose is the first and only
influenza vaccine designed specifically for people 65 years of age and
older. Persons in this age group have a
higher risk of complications from influenza.
Aging can decrease the body’s ability to have a good immune response
after getting the influenza vaccine. A
higher dose of antigen in the vaccine helps provide older adults a better
immune response and therefore better protection against the flu.
