Art Demonstration

Milford Library, 57 New Haven Ave., welcomes artist William P. Duffy, who will demonstrate the art of painting from a photograph on May 20 at 1:30 pm.

Many artists, when painting from full color photographs they like, don’t take into account the black to white value pattern in the photograph.  Color in photographs can be confusing to interpret. A strong value pattern is one of the keys to a strong painting, no matter what style an artist chooses.

The  program will cover the following topics and will also include a painting demonstration illustrating the topics covered.

  • Explain how to recognize the black, white, and grey value pattern in a full color photograph by way of changing a full color photograph to a black and white photograph.
  • Explain the value there is in designing any composition to arrive at a pleasing value pattern in black and white before beginning a painting.
  • Explain what a value pattern is and show examples of how artists, including Duffy, have used it in their work.
  • Show the value of thumbnail sketches in composing a painting using a simple black and white value pattern.

Whether you’re an experienced painter or a novice, this demonstration and tutorial

       can give you insights.

This free program is open to all.
