Pantochino Teen Theatre: "Young Frankenstein"

MILFORD – Pantochino Teen Theatre will present the Mel Brooks musical, “Young Frankenstein” for three performances August 10 - 12 at Milford Arts, the MAC on Railroad Avenue in Downtown Milford. The show features thirty local young actors, age 12 to 18 in a production sponsored by the Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation.

“Young Frankenstein” is based on the Mel Brooks comedy film which is an affectionate parody of the classic 1930’s horror film. The stage version features book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan and music and lyrics by Mr. Brooks. The story follows Frederick Frankenstein, grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein to his family's estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked sidekick, Igor, and a sexy lab assistant, Inga, Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors, bringing to life a creature to rival his grandfather’s. The musical is produced with special arrangement from Music Theatre International in New York.The cast includes young actors from Milford, Monroe, Fairfield, Stratford, Shelton, Trumbull, Orange and Branford.

Performances of “Young Frankenstein” are Friday, August 10 and Saturday, Saturday August 11 at 7:30pm and  Sunday, August 12 at 2pm. All tickets are $10. and available online at pantochino.com

Monthly Scout Redeemable Bottle/Can Fundraiser

Saint Mary Boy Scout Troop 721 and Cub Scout Pack 721 will be holding their Monthly Bottle & Can Collection Fundraiser. Please bring your redeemable bottles and cans to the parking lot behind Saint Mary Church at 70 Gulf St, Milford CT, between 7:30 AM and 1:45 PM.  Don’t hold on to your Summer Party redeemables in your garage, basement, back porch, or backyard, this is the perfect time to do some cleaning and get rid of these. This monthly fundraiser provides the funds needed to support our programs.  We sincerely appreciate those of you who consistently donate every month and we welcome new comers to bring their redeemable Bottles and Cans to support our program. If you are interested in our Scouting Program, stop by the fundraiser and we'd be happy to speak with you. Linux Command Line

 

Milford Public Library is presenting an introduction to Linux on Monday, August 13 from 2:30-4:00pm. This class is intended for those who have no exposure to the Linux command line and would like to learn for DIY projects like those that require a Raspberry Pi. The following will be taught: logging in, command line navigation, listing files, file permissions, what do they mean? The Shell, and environment variables, user account, installing software. Milford Library, 57 New Haven Ave., welcomes professional illusionist Matias Letelier to perform his show The Magic of Imaginationon August 14 at 6:30 pm.   With almost 20 years of experience, Letelier’s unique blend of magic, mentalism, clean comedy, pick-pocket, high energy, and (most importantly) lots of audience participation will keep you engaged and entertained. He started his career in his native Chile, and has been performing in the United States since 2011, recently becoming a US citizen. This is a great family event. Parking is limited; please consider parking at Lisman Landing.

Maintaining The Dignity of Life and Its Decisions

MAINTAINING THE DIGNITY OF LIFE AND ITS DECISIONS

            A presentation by the Catholic Cemetery Association will be focused on educating seniors and the challenges facing every family, while maintaining the dignity of life during end of life decisions. The discussion will take place at the Milford Senior Center, 9 Jepson drive, Thursday, August 16 at 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

            The Association’s panel of experts, including an Elder Care Attorney and Funeral Director will assist you and your family and will answer your questions.  These individuals are experienced in their field on how to manage elder care cost, and the details of Wills and final expenses, relieving the burdens on your loved ones.

Walnut Beach Farmers Market Dog Days of Summer

A wonderful vibrant market held from 4-7 pm on the third Thursday of every month.  Follow us on Facebook at Walnut Beach Farmers' Market and see the different exciting and inviting monthly themes for our shoppers and vendors.  This month is our Dog Days of summer so bring your pet for some special vendors and offerings just for the four legged friend.

We have 2 Farms, River Crest and Massaro, that come with their plants and produce plus 16 other vendors.  There's live music and games and fun for the kids and everyone! Hatter and Tatter face painting and crafts at every market.  Along with teas, seafood, pet products, jewelry, fresh  lamb, and seafood. 

The market also has local food trucks with their delicious desserts and pizza (Silver Sands Pizza).

Onigiri Anime

 

 Milford Library is hosting an anime club for high school students that meets on the third Thursday each month. The Young Adult Librarian will show various anime, and offer an opportunity for fans to discuss manga while having snacks!

Milford Oyster Festival

The 44th Annual Milford Oyster Festival will host Eddie Money this year on the Main Stage, John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band will open for Eddie and Mark C. Daniel will open the show.
The MILFORD OYSTER FESTIVAL has the largest variety of OYSTERS at any festival in the USA. This year we have about 40,000 oysters with 21 varieties from 8 states on the East Coast. The festival will also have 6,000 clams.Try one of each and enjoy them with a craft beer or premium wine!
In addition to the Main Stage entertainment, the event also includes a craft beer area at Lisman Landing, the Festival Car Show, Children’s Stage at Fowler Field, 200 Arts and Crafts vendors on the Green, amusement rides, schooner cruises, canoe and kayak races. The Oyster festival is a free event and no tickets are needed.
Oyster Eve, the festival kick-off event, will be held on Friday, August 17th, from 6:00p.m. till 10p.m. at Lisman Landing. Headlining the Lisman Landing Harbor Stage on Oyster Eve will be Frontiers, The Ultimate Journey Tribute Band. 
$5.00 Cover at the Door for Oyster Eve, under 14 free. All minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Free Shorebird Workshop at CT Audubon

Sharpen your shorebird identification skills at The Connecticut Audubon Society’s Coastal Center in Milford -- one of the best places to see shorebirds in the state!

Connecticut Audubon Executive Director Patrick Comins and other experts will conduct an indoor session followed by outdoor field study. Thousands of shorebirds gather at Milford Point in August to rest and feed on their migration south. You can expect (or hope) to see Semipalmated, Baird’s Buff-Breasted, Stilt, White-rumped, Pectoral, and Western sandpipers, among others.

Free event co-sponsored by the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA) and The Connecticut Audubon Society.

Legacy of the Summer People-Woodmont

THE LEGACY OF THE SUMMER PEOPLE-WOODMONT

            Author  Katherine Krauss Murphy will visit the Milford Senior Center at 9 Jepson Drive, Thursday, August 30 at 1:00 p.m. to share memories from her recent book, A History of Woodmont, The Legacy of the “Summer People”. 

           Woodmont was mostly farmland for 200 years, however during the late 1800’s several hotels opened and the first true summer cottage on the water near Oyster River was built.  Trolleys arrived followed by a real estate boom, allowing hundreds of summer residents to enjoy the sun, salt water, seafood and recreation.

  Katherine Krauss Murphy, author of ‘Woodmont on the Sound’ is a life- long resident of Milford and has lived in Woodmont for over 40 years.
